چکیده

Weanalysed CN red system (∼8000 Å) andC2 Swan system (∼4700 Å) to know carbon isotope ratios (12C/13C) for carbon stars in the Galactic halo, named CH stars. The isotope ratios are obtained for 6 CH stars by the curve-of-growth analysis of the isolated 12CN and 13CN lines. In this analysis, we compared directly 12CN and 13CN lines of similar intensities (iso-intensity method), and the resulting 12C/13C ratios are almost independent of the model atmosphere and its parameters. The 13CN lines appear to be too weak in some CH stars, for which we applied the spectral synthesis method to the stronger C2 Swan band, obtained 12C/13C ratios for two stars and estimated the lower limits of 12C/13C ratios for two stars. In this case, however, the results depend on model atmosphere and its parameters. Results from our present and previous works show that most of them (12 stars) distribute around 12C/13C∼ 10 and two stars have very high values (12C/13C≥ 500). The distribution of 12C/13C ratios in CH stars is different from that of the population I carbon stars as well as population II oxygen-rich giants (G∼K types). The CH stars of very high 12C/13C ratios can be explained by dredge-up of 12C due to 3α-process as in population I carbon stars (N-type). On the other hand the formation of the CH stars with low 12C/13C ratios requires the large supply of 12C followed by a process of decreasing 12C/13C ratio.

The APM Survey for Cool Carbon Stars in the Galactic Halo - II The Search for Dwarf Carbon Stars

We present proper motion measurements for carbon stars found during the APM Survey for Cool Carbon Stars in the Galactic Halo ( Totten & Irwin, 1998). Measurements are obtained using a combination of POSSI, POSSII and UKST survey plates supplemented where necessary by CCD frames taken at the Isaac Newton Telescope. We find no significant proper motion for any of the new APM colour-selected carb...

Magnesium Isotopes in Halo Stars

We have determined Mg isotope ratios in halo field dwarfs and giants in the globular cluster M71 based on high S/N high spectral resolution {R= 10^) Keck HIRES spectra. Unlike previous claims of an important contribution from intermediate-mass AGB stars to the Galactic halo, we find that our ^^Mg/^^Mg ratios can be explained by massive stars.

Primordial Stellar Feedback and the Origin of Hyper Metal-poor Stars

The apparent absence of stars in the Milky Way halo with −5 . [Fe/H] . −4 suggests that the gas out of which the halo stars were born experienced a period of low or delayed star formation after the local universe was lit up by the first, metalfree generation of stars (Pop III). Negative feedback owed to the Pop III stars could initially have prevented the pre-Galactic halo from cooling, which t...

The Century Survey Galactic Halo Project I: Stellar Spectral Analysis

The Century Survey Galactic Halo Project is a photometric and spectroscopic survey from which we select relatively blue stars (V −R < 0.30 mag) as probes of the Milky Way halo. The Survey strip spans the range of Galactic latitude 35 < b < 88, allowing us to study the nature of populations of stars and their systematic motions as a function of Galactic latitude. One of our primary goals is to u...

Chemical Abundance Constraints on White Dwarfs as Halo Dark Matter

We examine the chemical abundance constraints on a population of white dwarfs in the Halo of our Galaxy. We are motivated by microlensing experiments which have reported evidence for massive compact halo objects (Machos) in the Halo of our Galaxy, with an estimated mass of (0.1 − 1)M⊙; the only conventional dark astrophysical candidates for objects in this mass range are white dwarfs. However, ...
